The all-new Volvo EX30, set to debut in the U.S. market in 2024 as a 2025 model, recently marked its global sales introduction. This small premium crossover/SUV boasts a minimalist Scandinavian design and utilizes Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture 2 (SEA2) platform.
In the U.S., two primary variants will be available—the Single Motor Extended Range (rear-wheel drive) and Twin Motor Performance (all-wheel drive). Both versions share a 69-kilowatt-hour battery (64 kWh usable capacity), with the RWD version delivering an estimated 200 kilowatts, while the dual-motor variant reaches up to 314 kilowatts.
In Europe, the Volvo EX30 offers an entry-level Single Motor Standard Range variant with a smaller LFP battery (51 kWh/49 kWh usable) for enhanced affordability. Pricing for the entry-level Core trim starts at $34,950 MSRP (plus $1,295 destination charge, totaling $36,245), making it a compelling option. Other trims begin at $38,900 (Plus) and $40,600 (Ultra).
Despite being manufactured in Zhangjiakou, China, and imported to the U.S., the EX30 doesn’t qualify for the $7,500 federal tax credit. However, leasing options may still offer this incentive. In response to high demand, Volvo Cars announced additional production of the model in Europe, specifically in Ghent, Belgium, starting in October.
The Volvo EX30 is a significant addition to the all-electric lineup, introducing a notable price reduction. It fills a crucial gap in the small car segment, enhancing competition in the market.
Opting for the AWD powertrain in the Plus or higher Ultra trims results in a price increase of $10,000 compared to the RWD Core and $6,000 compared to the RWD Plus, bringing the total to $44,900 (plus DST). In Canada, a noteworthy data point reveals that as of December 13, “nearly 50%” of the allocated EX30 units for the country were already “sold out” since sales commenced on October 18.
Volvo EX30 EPA Range
The Volvo EX30 RWD is expected to achieve an EPA Combined range of 275 miles, while the AWD version is slightly lower at 265 miles. The notable distinction lies in power output, with the AWD version boasting the best acceleration in Volvo’s history at 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds, compared to the RWD’s still respectable 5.1 seconds. Additionally, the Volvo EX30 demonstrates towing capabilities of up to 2,000 lbs (RWD) and up to 3,527 lbs (AWD).

Volvo EX30 Charging
Charging-wise, the Volvo EX30 stands out with a DC fast charging time from 10% to 80% SOC in just 26.5 minutes, at speeds up to 153 kilowatts. The LFP battery version in Europe, accepting 134 kilowatts, recharges in a similar time as the larger NMC battery pack.
The onboard charger, rated at about 11 kilowatts, facilitates an 8-hour recharge from 10% to 90% SOC. Initially equipped with the CCS1 charging port, the 2025 model is expected to feature NACS. Future plans for the Volvo EX30 lineup in the U.S. may involve an LFP battery option with lower range and price, along with the introduction of a Cross Country version.
