Tesla reported total deliveries of 435,059 vehicles in Q3 2023, which fell short of the expected 455,000 units. Despite the decline, the company reiterated its full-year 2023 delivery target of around 1.8 million vehicles, which it is still on track to achieve.
The competition between Tesla and BYD reflects a contrast in their vehicle offerings. In the third quarter of 2023, BYD delivered 431,603 fully electric EVs, nearing Tesla’s sales figures. In 2022, BYD sold nearly 950,000 fully electric EVs, while Tesla sold around 1.3 million electric vehicles during the same period. Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, has acknowledged BYD’s competitiveness, tweeting, “That was many years ago. Their cars are highly competitive these days.” This marks a significant shift in Musk’s perspective, as he reportedly laughed when asked if he considered BYD a competitor a decade ago.
Tesla is also facing rivalry from Rivian, an American EV manufacturer. In 2020, Tesla filed a lawsuit against Rivian, claiming that Rivian acquired trade secrets through unfair means. Rivian has consistently denied all wrongdoing throughout the legal battle. The case is ongoing, with a judge ruling that parts of the lawsuit could proceed to trial, including the question of whether Rivian encouraged former Tesla employees to bring confidential information.
