BYD’s Upcoming Song L Electric SUV Gathers 11,000 Pre-Orders Prior to Official Launch

China’s leading EV manufacturer, BYD, is set to launch its mid-size electric SUV, the BYD Song L, on December 15, with a remarkable 11,000 pre-orders already secured. Originally showcased as the Song L EV concept during the Shanghai Auto Show in April, this electric SUV coupe, part of BYD’s Dynasty series, enters the market to compete with Tesla’s Model Y and ZEEKR 001.

Joining the Yuan Plus (Atto 3 overseas), Tang, and Han in the series, the Song L, based on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0, shares design similarities with the premium Denza N7 launched in June. Despite being available for just 17 days, BYD has garnered over 11,000 pre-orders for the Song L since opening them on October 31, 2023.

BYD’s latest electric SUV offers five trims, priced between 220,000 and 280,000 yuan ($30,700 – $39,000). Available in both single and dual-motor versions, the single motor boasts 150 kW or 230 kW peak power, while the dual version incorporates a 150 kW front motor, reaching a combined maximum power of 380 kW.

Propelled by BYD’s Blade battery (71.8 kWh or 87 kWh), the single motor achieves ranges of 550 km (341 mi) or 662 km (411 mi) CLTC, respectively. The dual-motor variant, equipped with an 87 kWh Blade battery, delivers a CLTC range of up to 602 km (374 mi).

BYD Song L Gains Momentum as Pre-Orders Accumulate

Following the recent unveiling of the Sea Lion 07, another mid-size electric SUV, BYD expands its offerings to compete with Tesla’s Model Y in the world’s largest EV market. As part of BYD’s Ocean series, the Sea Lion 07 is anticipated to spearhead a new sub-brand of vehicles under the Ocean brand.

Crafted by BYD’s chief designer and former Lamborghini and Audi head designer, Wolfgang Egger, the Sea Lion 07 draws inspiration from sea lions leaping into the water. Priced between 200,000 and 260,000 yuan ($27,700 – $35,900), this new EV, measuring 4,830 mm in length, 1,925 mm in width, and 1,620 mm in height, positions itself as a competitor to Tesla’s Model Y (L – 4,760 mm, W – 1,921 mm, H – 1,624 mm).

The BYD Song L, measuring 4,840 mm in length, 1,950 mm in width, and 1,560 mm in height, falls within the same category as the Model Y. In China, Tesla’s Model Y is presently priced between 266,000 and 363,900 yuan ($36,900 – $50,500).
