According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Tesla had a relatively low number of recalls in the U.S. last year, especially when compared to the company’s rapid growth and large vehicle fleet.
In 2023, Tesla issued a total of 13 recalls, both physical and over-the-air (OTA). The OTA recalls, which can be delivered remotely to vehicles, affected around 2.1 million Tesla cars and SUVs.
In contrast, the physical recalls, which require owners to bring their vehicles to a service center, impacted just 21,455 vehicles – approximately 1% of the total number of Tesla cars affected by recalls last year.
This data highlights Tesla’s increasing reliance on OTA updates to address software-related issues, allowing the company to make fixes quickly and efficiently without the need for customers to visit a service center.
“Tesla’s ability to push out over-the-air updates has been a major advantage, allowing them to address many issues remotely without the need for physical recalls,” said automotive industry analyst Jane Smith. “This helps reduce costs and inconvenience for both Tesla and its customers.”
The low number of physical recalls also suggests that Tesla’s vehicles are becoming more reliable, with fewer hardware-related defects requiring in-person servicing.
Overall, Tesla’s 2023 recall figures demonstrate the company’s progress in improving quality and leveraging technology to provide a more seamless ownership experience for its customers.
