Towing a 2024 Hummer EV: Navigating EV Complexities

488

In a recent tow job, a 2024 Hummer EV, a brand new all-electric SUV, needed to be moved out of a customer’s garage. The tow truck operator approached the task with caution, as the Hummer EV’s advanced technology and unique design features required special attention during the towing process.

First, the operator attempted to jump-start the vehicle, but the service battery fault condition persisted due to the Hummer EV’s two different charging systems. With jump-starting unsuccessful, the operator resorted to dragging the vehicle out of the garage using the factory towing procedure.

This procedure involved placing skates under each tire and carefully dragging the vehicle out while ensuring the wheels did not roll. The operator had to be mindful of the Hummer EV’s all-wheel-drive system and the potential risks of damaging the electric motors if the wheels were to rotate during the towing process.

To ensure a smooth tow, the operator used ITI Brands skates, one for each wheel, to prevent wheel rotation. Additionally, they used eight-point straps from DG Towing Supply to secure the vehicle to the tow truck.

The tow operator also needed to be cautious of the Hummer EV’s unique parking brake system. Since electric vehicles like the Hummer EV don’t have a traditional transmission, they rely on an electric parking brake. If the parking brake were to engage during the tow, it could potentially damage the electric motors.

Despite the challenges, the tow operator successfully moved the 2024 Hummer EV out of the customer’s garage and transported it to the dealership. This case demonstrates the importance of understanding the unique features of electric vehicles and following proper towing procedures to ensure a safe and successful tow.
