Peter Rawlinson, CEO of Lucid Motors, has confirmed the development of a third Lucid model, designed to compete directly with Tesla’s Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover. Derek Jenkins, Senior Vice President of Design and Brand at Lucid Motors, shared that the design of the upcoming vehicles, including a new mid-size model, is “fairly solidified,” indicating that the company is confident about the design direction.

Although the design is mostly set, there are ongoing reviews, leaving room for potential refinements and adjustments. Lucid Motors plans to build a second Advanced Manufacturing Plant (AMP) in Saudi Arabia, with an annual production capacity of 150,000 units. The new mid-size model, a more affordable car and a competitor to Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y, will be produced at this new facility.

The mid-size model is expected to be introduced “in a few years’ time,” as Lucid Motors actively works on bringing this electric car to the market. Rawlinson emphasized that the mid-size model is explicitly designed to compete with Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y, targeting the same market segment and customer base that Tesla has captured with its popular electric vehicles.

Lucid Motors considers the mid-size model their “big volume platform,” expecting high production volumes for this particular model. Rawlinson made it clear that Lucid’s primary competition in the future will be with Tesla in the mid-size electric vehicle market segment.

When it comes to speculating about the name of Lucid’s upcoming mid-size model, the CEO offered some intriguing possibilities. Since the name “Ocean” is already taken, Rawlinson suggested that the new model could be called “Arcane” or “Ether,” unique and fitting alternatives to “Project mid-size.”

The design of the mid-size SUV was described as “quite robust” during the speech, though it was not shown in the intro video. This has sparked curiosity among those following Lucid’s progress. Governor Doug Ducey, who attended the event, highlighted the rapid development of electric vehicle batteries and solar power technology in the region.

As Lucid focuses on solving bottleneck issues and optimizing production processes, the company appears to be on track to expand its facilities and begin producing the large SUV Gravity by the end of 2022. With increasing sales volume and expectations for the future, Lucid Motors is poised to become a significant player in the electric vehicle market.

Lucid’s mid-size SUV is said to have a range of over 440 miles, making it one of the most advanced electric SUVs in the world. Despite production issues and a temporary slowdown in 2021, David, a Lucid employee, assured attendees that the company had addressed many problems and improved the working environment at the factory.
